Top Ranked Father's Day Gift for 2017 - TaylorMade Golf
Testing the new M1 Driver by TaylorMade at Maui Country Club
For the last few years I had been playing a PING driver with a Stiff flex shaft and 7 degree loft. This worked well but my club head speed was too much for the shaft and after video review of my swing, I noticed way too much flex. I ordered the M1 driver with the HZRDUS XStiff shaft and 8 degree loft to put an end to this over flex and sprayed shots off the tee.
*Important Notes: I have played golf for over 15 years including high school varsity & some college golf. My best handicap (highschool/college) was around a 4 but am currently playing at around a 12. My main problems are consistency as work often gets in the way of golfing. Short game has stayed on point over the years but my iron shots and tee shots have been the trouble makers that keep my handicap high.
Here is how it all played out...
First Impression - TaylorMade M1 Driver
Arriving in just a few short days from when I opened it, the driver came well protected in a large heavy weight box. Inside was the packing slip with the exact specs of which I ordered the club. Unwrapping the driver from the packaging I was instantly drawn to the weight, rather the lack their of! This club was feather light and the carbon fiber head glimmered in my shop lights. The matte finish on the HZRDUS and tacky grip rounded out what was to become my new favorite club.
Opening Round at the Country Club
Like a little kid at Christmas I was so eager to get out and try the club I rushed over to the golf course and emptied a bucket of balls at the driving range in a matter of minutes. Feeling confident with the feel and accuracy I made my way to the first tee - a 350 yard par 4, slight dog leg right, straight into 20+ mile per hour wind. The tip stiff HZRDUS x-flex shaft and 8 degree loft turned out to be perfect for Maui golfing as I was able to keep my tee shot low and get solid yardage even into the wind. The following hole is a 350 yard par 4, straight as an arrow with the wind at your back. Feeling pretty good, I let loose and crushed a drive along the left side of the fairway, leaving me a short 10 yard chip to the green and registering around 340 yards off the tee. I put together a few good shots throughout the next half dozen holes and finally got to the par 4 ninth that finishes in front of the club house. This is 344 yards with the wind at your back and favors a slight draw. Again, I let the little white golf ball have it and smacked one to the front of the green. Having only made a handful of eagles in my life, I was ecstatic to add another to that list when I put the ball to the back of the cup from 15 feet out.
In true golfer style, a victory beer was in order after such a great round! Looking off at Haleakala in the background the the ninth hole in the foreground, it could have have been a better first round with my new TaylorMade M1 driver.
