As we head into the hottest months of the year, I think it's easy to get caught up in thinking about clothing that is solely comfortable and cool. Yes, clothing should be this way especially when you are sweating bullets in the heat, but there are great clothing staples that keep you looking like a gentleman and keep you equally cool. I was looking through my summer clothing, and realized the transition my goto easy clothes have made the past few years for the summertime. My clothes still have the understated cool effect, but they are much more refined. Basically, there are less logos, and prints, and tank tops... which are really all of the clothing items I used to rely on in college. There is nothing wrong with these, but mixing up the items and pairing them with a bit of summer finesse is the way to go. Let me tell you about the clothing that should make it into your closet this summer. All of these items have longevity, so you can rely on them for the next summer or two. These will be the clothing you will want to put on after work, on the weekend, for barbecues, and on casual dates.
Dri-Fit/ Versatile Shorts
These shorts have been slowly becoming more popular the past few years. Shorts like this are extremely functional, comfortable, and appealing. They almost are the texture of board shorts or trunks, but better. The best part is that they can easily function as a board short if need be... I like to wear these shorts to barbecues near the beach or pool, hiking, and on Saturdays while out in the city. These are a better option than wearing trunks all of the time, because they have the versatility of being acceptable in most public places. Most of the shorts are moisture wicking, which helps if you expect to sweat and most of us do in the summer. Also, you don't need to worry about chaffing because of the flexibility of the material. Several of the major surf companies have been making different styles, colors, and prints, so there are a ton of options to find the ones that suit you best. You can find these almost anywhere. Nordstrom has a variety of options, but many surf stores carry the shorts as well.
Short-Sleeve Button Down Collared Shirt
These types of shirts have been getting a lot of attention right now, and A Gentleman's Attire thinks they are worthy of the hype too. These are great to put on to amp up your appearance while still carrying a fun and relaxed vibe. However, I think it's important to pick one that can be worn over and over again. Many make large impressions, like some of the Hawaiian ones, so I recommend picking one you really like and can pair with other pieces of clothing. If you're on a budget, choose a more understated print, or a solid color. If you have a little more room to spend, pick a solid, print, and Hawaiian. Despite the reduction of the long-sleeve, checking the fit on the arms is important on these shirts. Sometimes the sleeves can be too tight or too loose, so if you have the luxury of trying them on...do it! Due to the popularity of these shirts, you can find them almost anywhere. H&M carries affordable options that look more expensive than the actually price, but remember you want to feel the fabric to make sure it is going to be breezy enough to wear during those hot summer days.
This one is pretty obvious...but there are some options that will take your look to the next level. Yes, t-shirts are great! Recently, I decided that my t-shirt collection needed an upgrade for the summer, and this is why. We rely on these shirts all of the time, and this can be a little typical or boring. By adding the same style shirts that have a bit more color or even a simple pattern will make you look that more put together, even on those summer days. Most of us have a certain brand or style t-shirt that we go to. I recommend looking to see if they carry more colors and print. Finding t-shirts with a pocket or in a brighter color helps transform your appearance and it is cheap and easy. Also, don't forget to replace the shirts after a while. I love my classic white t-shirt, but it usually is the quickest to look too worn. I think something like this teal shirt with the orange stripe looks cool without much effort.
Sperry Top Siders
Alright, it's hard to give one recommendation for the feet. I get that some shoes don't fit everyone the same and are not always comfortable for everyone. So if Sperrys are not for you, go with a pair of Toms or even Converse. Just make sure they are clean! A gentleman should have clean or polished shoes to make a good impression. Sperrys are great because they are a classic. I like that these are not limited to a certain age or decade. Most are great because they slide on which is a bonus when you're in a hurry, you don't have to worry about socks, and they look good. There are a ton of styles, so I recommend choosing something that will go with most of your clothing and that fit your feet well. They are relatively easy to find because this brand is everywhere and at most department stores.
